Planning Your Visit to Kuusamo

Kuusamo is a town in the Koillismaa region of northeastern Finland, situated around 200 kilometres southeast of Rovaniemi and close to the Russian border. It lies in North Ostrobothnia rather than the administrative Lapland region, but its landscape, climate, and character are closely aligned with Finnish Lapland. The surrounding area of forests, fells, and hundreds of lakes gives it a strong northern identity.
Ruka is a ski resort located around 25 kilometres north of Kuusamo town, and one of the most consistently well-regarded ski destinations in Finland. It offers around 40 slopes, a reliable snow record thanks to snowmaking capacity, and a well-developed village with restaurants, shops, and accommodation. It is one of the few Finnish resorts with a significant snowpark and is regularly used as a venue for World Cup freestyle and snowboard events.
Oulanka National Park covers around 270 square kilometres of river gorges, rapids, forests, and open fell terrain on the Finnish-Russian border. It is one of Finland's most visited national parks and one of its most visually dramatic, with the Oulankajoki River carving deep gorges through the landscape. In winter, the frozen rapids and snow-covered canyon walls create a striking setting for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The park is also the corridor for the Karhunkierros trail.
The Karhunkierros, or Bear's Ring, is one of the most famous long-distance trails in Finland, running approximately 80 kilometres through Oulanka National Park. In summer it is completed on foot over four to six days; in winter sections of it are skied or snowshoed. The route passes through the park's most dramatic terrain, including the Oulanka and Kitkajoki river gorges, suspended walkways, and dense old-growth forest. It is considered a benchmark trail in the Finnish outdoor calendar.
Yes. Kuusamo's latitude and the low light pollution of the surrounding national park area make it a reliable destination for Northern Lights viewing. The season runs from late August through early April, with the darkest winter months offering the best conditions. The open lake landscape and forest clearings around the town provide good sightlines away from built-up areas.
Kuusamo has its own airport with direct flights from Helsinki and some European cities during the winter season, making it one of the more straightforward Lapland-region destinations to reach by air. By road, it is around two and a half hours from Oulu and around three hours from Rovaniemi. The airport's direct connections and proximity to Ruka mean that ski trips can begin within minutes of landing.
