Planning Your Visit to Saariselkä

Saariselkä is a fell resort in northern Finnish Lapland, situated around 250 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and approximately 30 kilometres south of Ivalo. At this latitude, it is among the northernmost resort destinations in Europe, sitting within and alongside Urho Kekkonen National Park.
Urho Kekkonen National Park is one of the largest national parks in Finland, covering around 2,550 square kilometres of fell landscape, boreal forest, and open tundra in northern Lapland. It borders Saariselkä directly, giving visitors immediate access to an extensive trail network for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and hiking. The park is named after Finland's longest-serving president and remains one of the country's most visited protected areas.
Saariselkä has a quieter and more nature-oriented character than resorts like Levi or Ylläs. The fell village is smaller and less developed, with the national park forming the immediate backdrop rather than a busy resort centre. Visitors tend to come for the landscape and outdoor activities as much as the slopes, and the sense of space and remoteness is more pronounced than in larger Lapland destinations.
It is one of the best destinations in Finnish Lapland for it. The area has around 200 kilometres of maintained cross-country ski tracks, ranging from short loops near the village to longer routes that head deep into Urho Kekkonen National Park. The terrain, with open fells and forest trails, suits both recreational skiers and those looking for more demanding routes.
Saariselkä's far northern position, combined with minimal light pollution from the surrounding national park, makes it one of the better places in Finnish Lapland to see the Northern Lights. The open fell landscape provides wide, unobstructed views of the sky. The season runs from late August to April, with the darkest winter months offering the longest windows for viewing.
The nearest airport is Ivalo Airport, around 30 minutes away by road. Ivalo receives daily flights from Helsinki and seasonal connections from several European cities during the winter months. From the airport, transfers to Saariselkä are straightforward and can be arranged in advance.
