What to Expect During Your Fjellheisen Cable Car Experience

The cable car departs from the lower station in Tromsdalen, located about 10 minutes by bus or 30 minutes on foot from Tromsø city center. The four-minute ride to the top is smooth and quiet, operated by two gondolas named Seal and Polar Bear. Each gondola can carry up to 28 passengers.

At the upper station, guests are greeted with sweeping views of the city, sea, and mountains. There is no set visit duration, guests may choose how long to stay within the opening hours. Many take time to enjoy the scenery, photograph the landscape, or relax at Fjellstua Café, which serves coffee and snacks daily until late.

Best Views of Tromsø by Cable Car

The upper station at Storsteinen provides one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Northern Norway. On clear days, visitors can see deep into the fjords, across Tromsøya island, and toward the Lyngen Alps in the distance. Whether visiting in summer daylight or during winter twilight, the view is always impressive.

Practical Information for Your Fjellheisen Cable Car Visit

The cable car runs every 30 minutes in both directions. No reservations are required for specific times, visitors can board the next available departure upon arrival. In the event of high visitor numbers, additional rides are added shortly after.

The lower station is no longer accessible by private car. Parking is located a five-minute walk away at Solstrandvegen 30. Please follow local signage when arriving.

Wheelchair access is currently not available during the ongoing upgrades.
