Winter Nature Hike to Storforsen's Rapids in Swedish Lapland
Storforsen is home to Europe's largest unregulated rapids, a five kilometre stretch of white water in Swedish Lapland that keeps flowing even in the depths of winter. On this guided hike, you follow trails and footbridges through the snow-covered nature reserve to see the rapids up close, with a chance to spot animal tracks along the way.
What to Expect During Your Storforsen Winter Nature Hike
Your guide leads you along trails and footbridges through the nature reserve, following the river toward the rapids while sharing the history of the area, including its past as a route for floating timber downstream. Along the way, the forest and riverbanks are often coated in ice, where pools freeze and ice dams push water out among the trees, though the main force of the rapids never stops moving even in extreme cold. Tracks from grouse, hares, squirrels, deer, and reindeer are commonly seen in the snow, and there is a chance to spot otter or mink near the open water.
The hike is available as a shorter outing of around two hours, with time for a traditional fika and hot drinks along the way, or as a longer day tour that includes a longer walk and an outdoor lunch cooked over an open fire. Snowshoes are provided if the trail conditions require them.
Adventure and Flexibility
The walk is suited to a low level of fitness and works well for individuals, couples, or small groups, with solo travelers sometimes joining an existing group. As with any outdoor activity in the reserve, the route and pace can be adjusted, or the outing rescheduled, if weather conditions require it.
