Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls
Hike through Korouoma Canyon and witness its stunning frozen waterfalls. This guided tour offers scenic views, a Finnish campfire snack, and an optional overnight stay for complete wilderness seclusion.
What to Expect:
Explore the breathtaking beauty of Korouoma Canyon, where frozen waterfalls create a stunning winter wonderland. Located 110 kilometers southeast of Rovaniemi, this 30-kilometer-long canyon is a must-see natural attraction. During the winter months, the waterfalls freeze into incredible ice formations, making this a top destination for hikers and nature lovers. Your guided hike takes you through the canyon’s dramatic landscapes, offering spectacular views of the icy cliffs and a chance to experience Lapland’s tranquil wilderness.
The excursion begins with transportation to Korouoma Canyon, followed by a demanding hike through the snowy terrain. If you’re driving your own car, we can arrange for your guide to meet you directly at Korouoma Nature reserve. As you walk along the trail, your guide will share fascinating insights about the local nature, wildlife, and the canyon’s unique history. Along the way, you’ll pass frozen waterfalls, some towering over 60 meters tall, while taking in the crisp Arctic air and the serene beauty of the landscape. This hike is recommended only for participants with sufficient fitness to complete the full route, as the shorter trail does not offer the same views of the waterfalls.
At a designated rest area, you’ll enjoy a traditional Finnish campfire snack, including hot berry juice and grilled sausages. Your guide will demonstrate traditional fire-starting methods, adding a cultural touch to your adventure. This break is the perfect time to relax and soak in the peaceful surroundings before continuing the hike.
For those looking for a deeper connection with nature, we can arrange an overnight stay at the Korouoma Canyon in a traditional Finnish Kota, where you’ll enjoy the seclusion of the wilderness. The overnight option includes both lunch and dinner and 2 guided tours in the canyon, allowing you to fully disconnect and experience the beauty of the Arctic in complete solitude.
Adventure and Flexibility:
This hike is suitable for those with good fitness levels, as it covers a demanding route through uneven and icy terrain. Snowshoes are not recommended, as the trail follows a designated path.
