Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls

Guided Korouoma Frozen Waterfall Hike in Lapland

Hike through Korouoma Canyon and see its frozen waterfalls on a guided winter trek, with scenic views, a Finnish campfire snack, and the option to extend the experience with an overnight stay.

What to Expect during your Korouoma Frozen Waterfalls hike

Korouoma Canyon is one of the most impressive winter hiking areas near Rovaniemi, known for its steep cliffs, snowy forest trails, and large frozen waterfalls. This hike takes you down into the canyon and past ice formations rising along the rock walls, with the waterfalls as the main focus of the route. It is a rewarding way to experience a more rugged and striking side of Lapland on foot.

Korouoma Canyon lies about 110 kilometers southeast of Rovaniemi and stretches for roughly 30 kilometers through a protected natural area. The outing begins with transport to the trailhead, although if you are driving your own car, your guide can also meet you directly at Korouoma Nature Reserve. From there, the hike continues along a demanding winter route through snowy and sometimes icy terrain. Along the way, your guide may share more about the local nature, wildlife, and the canyon’s history, while the trail leads past frozen waterfalls that can rise more than 60 meters high.

At a designated rest area, there is time to stop for a traditional Finnish campfire snack, often with hot berry juice and grilled sausages. This break adds a warm and welcome pause to the hike before continuing through the canyon.

For those who want a longer wilderness experience, an overnight stay in the Korouoma area can also be arranged. In that case, accommodation takes place in a traditional Finnish kota, with lunch, dinner, and two guided outings in the canyon included as part of the experience.

Adventure and Flexibility

This hike is best suited to travelers with a good level of fitness, as the route can be long, uneven, and physically demanding in winter conditions. The full experience is designed around reaching the main frozen waterfalls, so the shorter trail does not offer the same views.

Because the trail follows a designated route, snowshoes are generally not recommended. The outing is most rewarding for those who are comfortable walking for several hours in winter terrain and want to experience one of Lapland’s most dramatic natural sites.
