Visit the Gold Museum in Lapland with Gold Panning and Mining Heritage
Explore the Gold Museum in Tankavaara, where indoor and outdoor exhibitions, guided programs, and year-round gold panning bring Lapland’s gold rush history to life. It is the world’s only international museum dedicated to the history of gold prospecting and panning.
What to Expect during your visit to the Gold Museum
At the Gold Museum, you explore the story of gold in Lapland and beyond, through exhibitions that cover the region’s gold rush history, international gold discoveries, and life on the goldfields. The visit combines indoor displays with an outdoor museum area, making it feel broader and more hands-on than a standard museum stop. It is a strong cultural visit for travelers who want something specific to northern Lapland and its mining heritage.
Inside the museum, the two main exhibition areas remain The History of Gold in Lapland and Golden World. The first focuses on more than 150 years of gold prospecting in Lapland, starting with the Ivalojoki gold rush, while Golden World looks at gold traditions and discoveries from over twenty countries. Outside, the museum area includes old prospectors’ buildings, machinery, and other displays connected to life on the goldfields.
Some of the best-known ways to experience the museum include:
- Introduction to Gold Panning
A guided session where you learn the traditional panning method and try it yourself. Gold panning is available all year round, outdoors in summer and indoors in colder months. The guided workshop includes museum entry and a short guided introduction to the Lapland gold history exhibition. - The Golden Tour
A guided visit focused on the history of gold in Finland and around the world, including the Lapland gold rush and the international Golden World exhibition under the world’s largest gold pan.
Adventure and Flexibility
The Gold Museum works well for families, couples, and solo travelers, whether the plan is a short cultural stop or a longer visit that includes gold panning and time in the outdoor museum area. It suits both guests who are mainly curious about Lapland’s gold history and those who want a more hands-on experience.
Because the museum is open year round and the panning experience also continues across the seasons, it is easy to include in different itineraries. The wider Tankavaara area, with its gold village setting and nearby trails, also makes it possible to turn the visit into a fuller stop rather than only a museum visit.
