Northern Exposures: Kilpisjärvi to Tromsø

This six-night journey moves through two very different sides of the Arctic. The first two nights are spent at Arctic Land Adventure in Kilpisjärvi, staying in a private glass igloo on a Sami reindeer ranch run by the Vasara family, whose herding traditions span twelve generations. From there, the trip continues to Tromsø for four nights at Clarion Hotel The Edge, a waterfront city hotel with sweeping views over the surrounding fjord. Along the way, the itinerary covers a reindeer farm visit with genuine cultural depth, a snowmobile safari to the point where Norway, Finland, and Sweden meet, whale watching by catamaran, a husky safari, and a scenic road trip to the fishing village of Sommarøy. You'll land in Tromsø and transfer to Kilpisjärvi, collecting your winter clothing along the way. Dinner is included at the ranch as part of your half board stay.

A Day with the Herd

Spend the day with a Sami reindeer herder from the Vasara family, going beyond a standard farm visit into a genuine introduction to the culture and daily life behind reindeer herding, with a wilderness lunch cooked over an open fire. Back at the ranch, the evening is set aside for a private sauna and outdoor jacuzzi session overlooking the lake, a fitting way to close two days immersed in Sami tradition. Dinner is included.

To the Edge of Three Countries

After checking out, a private snowmobile safari takes you to the point where Norway, Finland, and Sweden meet, one of the more distinctive border crossings anywhere in Europe. Lunch is taken at a local restaurant in Kilpisjärvi village before a car transfer continues on to Tromsø. Check into Clarion Hotel The Edge, a waterfront hotel in the heart of the city, with views over the surrounding fjord and mountains, with your winter clothing delivered directly to the hotel. In the evening, a private northern lights hunt heads out into the surrounding nature in search of clear skies, with snacks, hot drinks, and photos included.

Out on the Water

Spend a full day at sea on a high-speed catamaran in search of whales, moving through the fjords for up to eight hours and keeping a respectful distance whenever a pod is spotted. Lunch is served on board. The vessel is modern and comfortable, built for watching rather than speed, which makes for a calmer day than a typical whale watching trip. The evening is free to unwind in Tromsø.

Dogs, Puppies, and the City

Head out to a husky farm just outside Tromsø, where the visit starts with the farm's puppies before moving on to the sled itself, with the dogs setting a confident pace through the surrounding trees. The rest of the day is free to explore Tromsø, often described as the Paris of the North, with recommendations from your guide for the harbor, the Arctic Cathedral, or a good spot for coffee. In the evening, a second private northern lights hunt gives another chance at clear skies.

Fjords and a Fishing Village

Enjoy a private road trip along the coast to Sommarøy, a small fishing village where the mountains meet the sea. The drive includes regular photo stops as the landscape shifts between fjord and open water, with a light homemade picnic included along the way and time to explore the village itself. Weather permitting, an alternative location may be suggested. A quieter close to the trip before the flight home.

After breakfast, return your winter clothing at the hotel and transfer to Tromsø Airport for your flight home.
