Five Stops Across the Arctic

Ten nights and five very different bases make up this self-drive route through Finnish Lapland and into northern Norway. Starting at Vaattunki Wilderness Resort near Rovaniemi, the trip moves through Korouoma's frozen waterfalls, a night at Northern Lights Village Pyhä, three nights at Gáldu Hotel & Spa on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park, a stretch on the Norwegian coast at the fishing village of Bugøynes, and a final stop at Holiday Village Valle on the banks of the Teno River in Utsjoki. Along the way, the itinerary covers an Arctic SnowHotel visit, an icebreaker cruise across the border, a private guided hike through the canyon, an e-fatbike tour, snowmobiling across three fells, ice karting, a king crab safari, a reindeer farm visit, and a husky safari. Arrival and a Night in Ice

Land in Rovaniemi, collect your rental car, and drive to Vaattunki Wilderness Resort, your first base along the Ounasjoki River. Collect your winter clothing and check into your Arctic Deluxe room. In the evening, visit the Arctic SnowHotel to walk through its sculpted rooms and corridors before a three-course dinner in the Ice Restaurant, served on ice plates for dessert.

Across the Border by Icebreaker

A day trip takes you across into Sweden for a three-hour icebreaker cruise through the frozen sea, including a stop for the ice floating experience and a look at the captain's room and engine room. Lunch is served on board. Return to Vaattunki Wilderness Resort in the evening.

Waterfalls Along the Way

Check out and drive around two hours to Korouoma Canyon for a private guided hike to the frozen waterfalls, a 6km route with an open fire picnic included along the way. From there, continue around two hours to Pyhä and check into Northern Lights Village Pyhä, a forest property near Pyhä-Luosto National Park.

Electric Trails and a Longer Drive

Before checking out, spend the morning on an e-fatbike tour through the trails of Pyhä-Luosto National Park. From there, drive around two and a half hours to Saariselkä and check into Gáldu Hotel & Spa, set on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park.

Across Three Fells

A private two-hour snowmobile safari takes you across the three fells surrounding Saariselkä, one of the more scenic routes in the area. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the hotel's forest spa.

Back into Lapland

Check out and drive around two hours back into Finland to Utsjoki. Along the way, stop at a reindeer farm for a visit with a Sami herder, learning about the daily routine of the farm, feeding the reindeer, and taking a sleigh ride, with hot drinks and cookies included. Check into Holiday Village Valle, on the banks of the Teno River.

Huskies and a Lavvu Dinner

Set off on a husky safari through the snowy forest around Utsjoki, with hot drinks and cookies included. In the evening, a three-course kota dinner brings Sami stories and Joik singing around the fire, hosted by a local Sami chef.

Check out and drive around two and a half hours to Ivalo Airport, returning your rental car and clothing before your flight home.
